It’s been a minute.

Actually, it’s been about seven months since I posted anything on this blog. And for that, please let me apologize to those who follow, read, or comment. I appreciate all of you so much.

That said, I owe you a bit of an explanation and a promise to stay in the fight. That fight, by the way, prompted my good friend Greg and I to launch this blog in the first place. More on that later.

But first, a few housekeeping issues.

I was in a bad place about a year and a half ago. The posts were becoming less frequent. My personal life was at a low point. Something just wasn’t right. Writing posts, which I’d been very passionate about at one time, began to become less and less important. What the hell was happening to me?

I used to live and breathe politics, but it became a burden. When I think back, I can only come to one conclusion: I was burned out.

My better half suggested I get back into the workforce. It took me a while to realize it, but she was spot on. That could be what was missing in my life. I knew something had to change.

After months of looking for the right opportunity, I found a gig that was right up my alley. I saw an ad on Indeed, the employment website, for a delivery driving job. It said 20-25 hours a month. I thought, why not?

That 20-25 hours per month has turned into about 20-25 weekly. I’m now the distribution coordinator for a travel magazine here in Oregon. I drive around to about 650 businesses throughout roughly half the state of Oregon and a portion of Northern California. I answer to one man, the owner and publisher of the magazine. We’re good friends, and he’s the nicest boss I’ve ever had.

It’s amazing sometimes when I think about it. I couldn’t wait to retire from my years of driving for FedEx. And now, seven years later, I’m doing the same thing. Only this time, there’s less pressure, the physicality is not as bad, and I get to drive around some of the most beautiful places in America.

A good gig. Finally, I’m in a much better place – mentally.

So now that you know where I’ve been these last several months, what does that mean for this blog moving forward?

The short answer is that I’m not giving up the fight. I’m on a break now with my new job. The fall and winter months aren’t quite as busy as the spring and summer, which, as you might have figured out by now, has allowed me to take a breather and write this post. I’m hoping to do more of the same in the future.

While my posting has been primarily non-existent this past year, I still pay attention to what’s happening in the world. That part will never change. I still have politics in my blood. I can’t NOT pay attention. It’s virtually impossible because my life’s always been that way. Owning this blog allows me to write what I want when I want. I’m not giving up on it. Not now.

And here’s why.

I care. It’s as simple as that. Right now, our democracy is on life support. One party wants it protected and preserved. The other? Let’s say that Abe Lincoln and Dwight Eisenhower are turning over multiple times in their graves. They would not recognize the current iteration of the GOP. They’ve lost their collective minds – and their morality. Somehow, we need to destroy this version of the GOP. Defeating them, and all aspects of the MAGA movement must be the number one priority. It will not be easy.

So much has happened in the months I haven’t been posting. We now have a twice-impeached former president and a four-time indicted one. You’d think those facts alone would disqualify anyone from ever running for political office, let alone being the leading GOP candidate.

Only in America, with the ridiculous Electoral College, could this even be possible. Donald Trump lost the popular vote in 2016 and 2020, yet he was able to inhabit the White House for four years. He still has his rabid cult, and they continue to throw money at him. Amazingly, he leads his nearest challengers for the GOP nomination by over 30 points.

But America would not elect such a man again. Right? I’m sorry to break it to you; yes, they could very well reelect the man – even if he’s found guilty in every one of the cases he’s charged in. Let that sink in for a moment. It’s utterly preposterous. Yet, it’s a scenario we could see ourselves in next year.

And that brings me to the next delicate and sobering reality: Americans do not want Joe Biden to run for president in 2024. They also do not want Trump. But this is the seeming reality of what will happen next year. Currently, these two will be our choices, like it or not.

I like Joe Biden. His accomplishments are more than impressive, considering his narrow majorities in Congress since he became president in 2021. All jobs lost during Trump’s disastrous term have returned, plus about 4 million. Wages are up; unemployment is down. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, Medicare can now negotiate for lower drug prices. Insulin is now $35 for seniors. Billions are now flowing toward infrastructure projects. He’s invested more in the green economy than any previous president. There’s more, of course.

But it doesn’t matter. Most Americans disapprove of Joe Biden. There are reasons for this, not the least of which is the lack of effective messaging from the Democratic Party. We can also lay much of the blame on the national media. The chaos and criminality surrounding Trump is too juicy to adequately cover what Biden has done. Chaos, division, and breaking news drive eyes and ears to television sets. Biden showing up at an infrastructure event isn’t newsworthy enough, unfortunately.

In order to be honest with ourselves, however, we must mention the massive elephant in the room: Joe Biden is an old man. If reelected, he’ll be 82 years old on inauguration day – 86, if he makes it to the end of his second term. The narrative in America is that Joe is too old to run. And that includes a vast majority of Democrats. Most would like a younger alternative. You can count me as one of those folks.

Let’s be honest on another topic, though. Trump is an old man as well. Joe Biden is in twice the shape that Trump is. He still rides his bike, hikes, and always works out. Other than slogging around on a golf cart, there’s nothing else the disgraced former president does physically – unless you count the exercise of flapping his jaws 24/7 on social media and the public airways, for which he has no equal.

The bottom line is that Joe Biden will most likely be the nominee. Yes, I’d like new blood. But I will do my level best to make sure he wins reelection. Regardless of my concerns about his age, I will proudly vote for him again. Besides, the old guy in the White House does know how to get things done. He’s got the record to prove it.

Will Democrats be there for him in 2024? Most will likely. I certainly will be there. But deep down, I do wish we had a younger candidate. In a perfect world, we’d have two different candidates entirely – much younger than the two we’re most likely to have.

You cannot argue with Biden’s accomplishments. The facts are what they are if you wish to see them. Some will never give him credit. Yes, inflation is still an issue for folks, although it’s come way down since the immediate aftermath of our painful recovery from the Covid nightmare.

But it’s still a struggle for so many. Gas prices are rising again, and the Saudis and Russians have announced production cuts that will keep the price of oil high. This is by design, in my view. Both of the rogue countries want Trump back in the White House. I wouldn’t be surprised if gas were close to $6 per gallon by the time the election gets here next year.

Yes, there is a pessimistic tone to this post. It’s in my blood to worry about such things. We have over a year before we place our votes for president in 2024. I should calm down and recognize that so much can happen between now and then.

Many of you will capitalize on the ageism I’ve engaged in regarding Joe Biden. I apologize to anyone who might be offended. I’ve always prided myself on being as honest as possible on this blog. Today is no exception.

But let me be clear: An old Joe Biden in the White House for another four years would be a million times better than the alternative. We’ve seen the alternative, and that person, when he was in office, nearly upended democracy in the United States of America.

  1. GREAT to have you back in the saddle!!! You’ve been missed!

Of all your wrote (most of which I agree with), this, to me, is SPOT-ON — the lack of effective messaging from the Democratic Party. Trump makes his own news, of course, but the Republicans aren’t sitting on their hands either.

The Democrats simply MUST get off their hineys and start “reminding” folks of all that Biden has done. (Perhaps you should send a copy of this post to them!)

Once more — SO good to have you back.

    1. It’s good to be back, Nan, and thank you! Totally agree. Dems must be more aggressive. I saw some polls from previous years, however, where Obama and Bill Clinton were both in the same position in identical points in time in their terms. And those both ended up ok. I can only hope the same occurs. One thing the GOP is good at, besides lying, is that they find an issue and pound it repeatedly. And the media magnifies it. This cannot continue without an aggressive message to counteract. It’s not gonna be easy!!

  3. Despite what the numbers said, employment is better, those in need of social welfare are, reduced, somewhat, the Republicans are attacking the Democrats, because that is what the party that doesn’t control the U.S. government does, so they might have a chance of, winning the, next, upcoming, elections, and, there are, the hoards of followers of the cultist political party, that refuse to, think with their brains, to, analyze the situations, and are still, passionate supporters of, the Republican Party, and, they’d already forgotten, how bad the U.S. was, during, Trump’s, reign, and, these blind people, will still vote Republican, next time an election comes, around, and, there’s, nothing that, anyone can, do about it, only pray, that the majority nof who will cast that ballot in the upcoming elections will, wake up and, open their eyes, and, see the truth.

    1. To some people, if gas prices are low, and goods and services as well, they really don’t care who is president. I really believe many voters reside in this category of people. Even a corrupt autocrat like Trump is fine with them as long as they aren’t being hurt in the pocket book. It’s really that simple.

    2. Jeff, WP is acting weird. It’s not letting me reply by simply calling up the post. I’m writing this via the feed … and I’m not sure it’s going in the right place.

Anyway, in response to your comment, it’s all a PERSONAL thing to many folks. The Big Picture is less-than-important.

      1. Totally agree, Nan. It’s definitely personal for many folks. And some just don’t have the time or intellectual curiosity to see what the true facts of situations are. It doesn’t help when you have social sites like Twitter, now, spewing ridiculous hate and conspiracy theories. It’s very troubling.

    1. No Scott. He’s not right. I could list some major accomplishments of Biden, but it wouldn’t be worth my time because you wouldn’t believe me, regardless of verifiable facts. The narrator is clearly a MAGA guy. He kept calling the Democratic Party, the ‘Democrat,’ Party, which is meant to be insulting. He calls Trump the last true president, which is bizarre on its face.
I’ll say this, he’s not only the last president to not accept defeat and concede; he’s the ONLY one. And that, my friend, should disqualify him from ever sniffing the White House again.
He fomented an attempted coup/insurrection. He demanded the Secretary of State of Georgia “find me 11,780 votes.” He tried a phony/illegal fake elector scheme, and pressured other statehouses to not certify the election. By any measure you want, he’s the most dangerous man in America as we speak. He’s slowly being held to account-much too slow for my comfort level. But, he will pay for his crimes at some point.
The real question the narrator should have asked is this: Will the Republican Party nominate a criminal for president or should they nominate another person to take HIS place?
I’ll say this, Scott. I think Biden is too old, and I think Trump is too old as well. I’d love for this contest to be between two much younger candidates. But, we are where we are. I will vote for an old Joe Biden over a criminal any day. And by the way, if you think Trump isn’t in an accelerated stage of decline, you are sadly mistaken. The guy can barely sling two meaningful and understanding sentences together. He slurs his words and confuses Nancy Pelosi with Nikki Haley and Biden with Obama, among many other gaffes. Again, I could send you clips. But why? Would it matter?

      1. One wonders why the Trump supporters so easily overlook/forget/ignore all the underhanded efforts by Trump to cancel out the 2020 election results.

Also … funny how past presidential candidates that lost didn’t se the need to do this sort of thing.

        Liked by 3 people

      2. Good hearing from you, Nan. 100%. Every president before him did the right thing. Even Al Gore, who had as rightful a challenge to an election as anyone, conceded. Once the Supreme Court intervened and stopped the count, Gore did a national address and said it was time to move on. What an honorable thing to do. I was crushed, but I understood his reasoning.
Now look where we are. The same guy who didn’t do the right thing, gets to run again for the same office he tried to take unlawfully. How in the hell did we get here?

        Liked by 2 people

      3. well I agree with you that both of them are too old and we nees younger people in there, just as with congress. It’s curious that I didn’t get these responses in email, even though I checked the box that said get new comments in that way. Wonder what’s up with that.
By the way, as many stupid things as trump did, increasing the debt, being wishwashy on covid, etc, at least under his administration, we weren’t in any major conflicts with anyone.
But then, the democrats have become the war loving party, in bed with the military industrial complex. They used to protest war but now they love it and there’s noehting you could say that would change my mind about that. facts are facts.

      4. I’m a Democrat. I don’t love war. If you think our presidents should embrace cold-blooded dictators the way Trump did, so be it. Autocratic dictators like Putin, Kim in North Korea, and China’s Xi would love nothing better than Trump back in the White House. They say democracy does not work, and Trump has pretty much joined in that assessment.
He will weaken NATO, if not get us out of there entirely, leaving Putin to take over Ukraine and possibly move even further West. I assume you know the history of WW11, Scott. If you don’t think it couldn’t happen again, you’re sorely mistaken. I hate war. But sometimes you must take a stand. If not us, who?

  10. listen to what crying chucky says, it’s clear that the democrat party is the pro-war party now. That doesn’t mean that every individual democrat out there like yourself supports war but at least be honest about what your party has become.

It’s duely noted that you’ll take the time to pick apart a sentence but not respond to the substance of the link I posted. 1. I’m not pro war. Democrats are not pro war. There are times when we need to get involved. I’m sure you’re familiar with WW11 and why we were involved, right? And btw, no troops are involved with Ukraine. We’re simply trying to help them stave off a dictator’s brutal and illegal invasion of a country that wants to be a democracy. They want to be part of the EU. They also want to be part of NATO. Putin wants the old Soviet Union back. Do you think, if victorious, he’ll simply stop with Ukraine? He’s been engaging in this type of behavior for years now. Like it or not, the US does stand for democracy around the world. If not us, who, Scott? Again, it’s weapons assistance and it represents less than 1% of our total budget. We can and should help them. That’s my take

  12. even the special counsil has deemed that your hero, your mesiah isn’t all mentally there. Obviously he won’t be charged for his classified documents deal because democrats have double standards. if they didn’t have double standards, they wouldn’t have any standards at all.

    2. Breaking News: Biden’s old. So is YOUR messiah, btw. And your messiah is a 91 count/4 times indicted criminal. Vote your conscious Scott.
Btw, aren’t you in the camp of saying Biden has ‘weaponized’ the Justice Department? Isn’t that what we’ve been told by the far right for 3 years now? So weaponized means his AG, Merrick Garland, appoints a Trump appointed right-wing hack who did a 15 month exhaustive investigation, against his own boss? And threw MAGA a nice big bone about Biden being an ‘elderly’ old man who can’t remember? Only in far-right crank land would that be considered weaponization.
The report also, btw, distinguishes why Trump WAS charged, and Biden was not. Maybe you should read it. Double standard my ass
