Over the years I’ve mostly avoided writing about the abortion issue. Why? Because I grew tired of debating it with those who are on the pro-life side of the argument. It never mattered one way or another what reasoning or facts I would offer. Because in many cases it was the one and only issue with which many of these folks determined who they would support in any election. In other words, why bother? Convincing someone to think differently about a subject when they are so adamant about being right no matter what has become a lost cause, in my view.

So today when my friend Jerry over at Grumpy’s Grumblings politely asked me to do a link to his post, which deals with abortion, I was hesitant at first to do it. But the more I thought about it I came to a different conclusion. While Jerry and I disagree on the subject for the most part, he comes at it from a slightly different angle. He’s changed his political affiliation from being a lifelong Republican to now being a member of the Democratic Party. However, he’s a pro-life Democrat, which while certainly a minority position within the party, it’s not unheard of to be sure. I do not know the percentages but I suspect there are more than we might think.

So with that said, I’m going to provide you a link to check out his piece. As always, Jerry is thoughtful and thorough in his approach and I think many of you will see that he brings out some good points. Some of you will disagree, period. On this platform, though, you’re always free to voice your opinion, yay or nay.

Here is the link to Jerry’s post: Grumpy’s Grumblings

Thanks for the debate Jerry!

  1. Good share, Jeff!!! I agree in part with Jerry’s view … I’ve long said that pro-life is a misnomer, for they don’t believe in the sanctity of life, but only wish to take away the right of a woman to make her own choice. There are other circumstances too, though, that need to be considered. I commented over at Jerry’s place, so no need to repeat myself here. Thanks for sharing this one! As always, ol’ Grumpy is the voice of reason.

Thanks for weighing in Jill. Yes, he is a voice of reason and I respect his opinion. Like I said in my intro, I generally do not like to even discuss it because it’s beyond polarizing and most of the more militant pro-lifers will never change their minds. But Jerry offers a different take. I wish more of them would be like him.

      1. Y’know … if everyone had as much common sense as Jerry does, we wouldn’t be having the divisiveness and calls for violence that we have today. We could actually TALK to each other, REASON with one another, and find common ground for COMPROMISE! WHOA … sounds like something from a sci-fi movie, doesn’t it?

It’s a concept from a different era Jill. There was a time, about a 100 years ago(LOL), where there was compromise and the parties didn’t hate each other as much. Those days are long gone. SIGH!!

      3. I still say it is the Republicans way of pushing back against having had a Black president for eight years. I think that exacerbated their inherent racist tendencies and they’re out for blood now. SIGH.

      4. It absolutely was the catalyst for what we see from them. The bigots and the racists were activated, and Trump gave them a reason for their pathetic existence.

      5. Yep … they have opened a door that I fear we may not be able to get closed again for a very long time, my friend.

  2. The heartbeat is supposedly a determining factor as to the “cut-off” for a viable abortion. Here is what livescience.com has to say:

But what exactly do we mean when we talk about a “fetal heartbeat” at six weeks of pregnancy? Although some people might picture a heart-shaped organ beating inside a fetus, this is not the case. Rather, at six weeks of pregnancy, an ultrasound can detect a little flutter in the area that will become the future heart of the baby. This flutter happens because the group of cells that will become the future “pacemaker” of the heart gain the capacity to fire electrical signals.

But the heart is far from fully formed at this stage …

Although a lot of weight seems to be put on the detection of this flutter, by no means does it translate to viability of the heart or viability of the pregnancy.

Thanks for sharing that Nan, and I remember hearing or seeing this exact explanation. I’ve always thought that whenever the experts said the fetus could become viable outside the womb would and should be the cutoff point. But that doesn’t seem to be set in stone. I don’t even know what the universal opinion on that is anymore. Do you?

      1. I don’t think there is a “universal opinion” on much of anything these days! And actually, a good illustration is this graphic of the cut-off point in the various states.

Thanks for sharing that Nan. Geez. If that doesn’t show how divided we are nothing does. There’s no such thing as consensus-obviously!!
