Does anyone know what happened to the “freedom convoy?” For some reason, I haven’t heard much from the MAGA crazies who took off from Southern California last week. You know, the ones with the Trump flags and banners; the “Let’s go Brandon” crowd. Some were supposed to arrive in time for President Biden’s State of the Union speech. Others are supposed to arrive over the next few days.
They were poised to do what the idiots in Canada did a few weeks ago, blocking bridges and traffic, yelling about their freedoms being infringed upon, and demanding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau be imprisoned.
Eventually, those folks were disbursed, arrested, and shown to be what they were: a bunch of loud-mouth jerks who didn’t like all of the mandates surrounding COVID-19. To Fox News viewers, though, you may as well equate them to Rosa Parks and other civil rights activists from the 1960s.
Only in America would we have right-wing media canonize a bunch of cowardly malcontents who couldn’t be bothered to get a jab in their arms or wear a cloth over their face. Not just to protect themselves, but more importantly, their fellow citizens.
Meanwhile, overseas, we’re seeing horror and bloodshed brought about by a murderous thug dictator, who at the present time continues to bombard the innocent citizens of Ukraine, who only want to live their lives free of tyranny from their big bully neighbor to the East.
The bravery we’re seeing play out on major news outlets and social media is beyond inspiring. It’s quite clear now if it wasn’t before Vladimir Putin unleashed his war machine upon the Ukrainian people, that freedom — yes, actual freedom — is at stake, and they will fight the invaders with every last breath they take.
And the leadership we see from their President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, embodies the true human spirit. Here’s a guy, a one-time comedian, who played the role of president of Ukraine on a TV show there, telling his people he’s in the fight for the long haul.
Instead of taking the easy way out as the disgraced president of Afghanistan did, fleeing when the Taliban began taking over, Zelenskyy has remained in his country. We’ve seen him having lunch with his troops, doing interviews with journalists, making statements on social media, and vowing to repel Putin’s military from his country no matter what.
And he’s doing all of it knowing he’s public enemy number one in Putin’s eyes. There’s a bounty on his head, and he knows it. If he somehow doesn’t survive, so be it. Fighting for his country was more important.
Do not think for a minute that the bravery of Zelenskyy isn’t tied to the courage of his people. When you see a guy who knows he could be killed at any moment standing up for freedom and the rule of international law, you know it makes an enormous difference. If he’s willing to die, then so are they. How can you not be impressed?
But sure, let’s talk about the “freedom from tyranny” our convoy pals are so riled up about. We’ve had to deal with a deadly pandemic now for over two years. All we did was ask people to do the bare minimum to help get us through the nightmare.
That’s right, put a mask on indoors when you’re around other people and get a vaccine so we can get on with our lives. A majority of folks heeded the call. They did what was right and what was asked of them. Yes, a few bitched and moaned about it, but most still did the right thing in the end.
A lot of it was simply people being people, in that most of us don’t like being told what to do. Still, though, to live in an orderly society, there are rules by which we must abide. Otherwise, it’s chaos and anarchy. In the case of a health emergency such as COVID, federal, state, and local authorities have every right to set rules to protect the public. The MAGA freedom crowd does not agree.
I hear conflicting news reports about the convoy. Some on social media are saying the protest is losing steam. Others say the movement is fractured, with some set to arrive in D.C shortly or merging with similar convoys on the road who are supposed to eventually converge on the nation’s capital.
Our government has been forced to respond. The National Guard is there, just in case, as is temporary fencing. That’s the way it is these days. On January 6, 2021, we saw what was possible when a cult decided they didn’t like the results of an election. God forbid we have an angry mob pissed off about wearing a mask.
And the funny thing about it all now is that mandates are slowly going away across much of the country. Soon, their ridiculous protests will be all for naught. But they’re pissed anyway because their dear leader isn’t president. He’s still a defeated loser, so they can whine and moan about that, I suppose.
Meanwhile, folks are dying in Ukraine, not knowing what carnage may be on the horizon. Thousands are fleeing, forced to abandon what they used to call home. Their president gives them hope, though. His bravery and calm under immense pressure have shown the world what heroic leadership looks like.
The convoy of losers heading to D.C. ought to take some lessons from President Zelenskyy and his fellow citizens. The next time society asks you to do something to help protect the public from a dangerous pandemic, remember the types of sacrifice going on right now in Ukraine.
All men, 18 to 60, were asked to stay in Ukraine to help fight the war criminals currently occupying their country. All we asked of Americans was to take a jab in the arm and put on a freaking mask. See the difference?
