Our good friend Jerry over at Grumpy’s Grumblings has an excellent post out today detailing yet another sad example of a GOP politician willing to sell their soul to the disgraced 45th President. I’ve included a link at the end to continue reading. Thanks Jerry!

So, Congressman Jim Banks now wants to replace Liz Cheney as House Republican Conference Chair. Oh, how power corrupts.

I—sort of—knew Jim Banks, once upon a time. We weren’t close friends. Barely passing acquaintances, despite the fact that our desks within Focus on the Family’s Public Policy division were no more than 50 feet apart—and separated by a few layers of Herman Miller cubicle walls. I suspect that now, some 16 years later, I could walk up, shake his hand, and re-introduce myself and he wouldn’t remember me. He’s now flying along at a much higher altitude than the one I inhabit.

But the Jim Banks I knew by reputation back in those days was a young man who, while resolutely on board with the entire far-right, conservative agenda, was also honest, honorable, fair-minded, and perhaps even empathetic—by conservative reckoning.

I wish that—back during the early days of the 2016 presidential campaign—I’d made and saved a screen capture of an article I read in which the still relatively new Congressman Banks voiced his grave concerns about the brash, mendacious, corrupt Donald Trump as the possible standard-bearer for the Republican Party. But I didn’t, so you’ll have to accept my word that I did read such an article.

That Jim Banks, like so many GOP politicians—folks who never really liked or admired Donald Trump—sold his soul for acceptance and power.

  1. Just another member demonstrating the weak, sniveling, and disgusting traits of his party.

  2. Jeff, the lesson that has been present for oh so long, well before the former president took office, is those who fly to close to the former president will get burned. As Thomas Wells, an attorney who worked for the person noted, if you are on his good side, don’t get used to it, as you won’t be there long. It matters not the who. It matters only the when. The unraveling will occur. When I see a happy face accepting an appointment from the former president, my first reaction is that smile will go away at some point and he/ she will leave or be fired. You cannot bow low enough or jump high enough to satisfy the fragile ego of the former president. Keith

    1. I totally agree with you, Keith. Trump is in it (life) for HIMSELF … Period. He’ll do and use whatever it takes to make sure HE benefits. Once the person/activity no longer feeds his ego, he moves on … and never looks back.

    2. Already this morning Keith, the former guy has released a statement calling Liz Cheney a horrible person. For telling the truth. And he knows it. The man is a danger to our democracy as long as he’s still alive.

      2. Jeff, I spoke with a aide for a GOP Congressman to share my concerns over what a shame it is that Liz Cheney is being ousted citing more arguments. After he heard me, he noted I had a right to share my difference on positions. I said, this is not a difference on positions. This is a difference between truth and lying. I said I do not agree with many of the positions of Liz Cheney, but in this instance she is calling out the former president for his lying and sedition. Then, I shared that this is not just my opinion, David Brooks, a conservative pundit said on PBS Newshour just this Friday that “to be a leader in the Republican party, you have to lie.” Keith

      3. That’s it in a nutshell Keith. Lying is now a prerequisite for membership into the GOP. You must lie about the 2020 election, or else. You must pledge allegiance to the former guy, or else. Perhaps Cheney, Kinzinger, Romney, and a few others ought to become part of the movement to start a third-party. What do you think? I know it’s far-fetched and quite frankly, hard as hell to do. But it seems to me it’s now or never. I mean, how much lower can they go?

      4. Jeff, 100 Republicans announced they would start new party if the GOP does not get its act together. As per usual, the former president name called them. Keith

      5. Yes, as he always does. It’s amazing that he’s 75 years old. I know 5 year olds more mature than him.

  3. They all do it for one thing. Votes…also aided by trump support by kissing his ass thus ensuring the cult will support them. We are not held hostage by trump or the republicans, if you think about it, but by the stupid ignorant gullible and fearful Trump base.
