“Smallness of mind is the cause of stubbornness, and we do not credit readily what is beyond our view.” – Francois de la Rochefoucauld

I’ve encountered more than enough stubborn, small-minded human beings to convince me of the accuracy of de la Rochefoucauld’s wisdom. Sadly, I must admit that the majority of those stubborn, small-minded folks I met were among my fellow evangelical Christians. I’ll not elaborate again on the many examples of modern evangelicals’ intransigent indiscretion and imprudence. (One can read such examples elsewhere on this site.) Suffice it to say that logic and sound, deductive reasoning are all too often in short supply among the current crop of the church-going Christian proletariat.

As an example, I present the inane rantings of one Mario Murillo, a Marty Feldman lookalike who fancies himself a modern-day “prophet.” Among Murillo’s myriad madcap YouTube posts is one carrying the title “Why Were There So Many False Prophecies About The Election?” I couldn’t resist; I had to watch it.

The obvious answer to the question posed in the title is that the folks who gave those “prophecies” are charlatans who pretend to have a special, direct line to God. But Murillo’s answer to his own question twists biblical scripture into blaming not the incorrect prophets, but rather blaming 1. congregations for not “repenting,” and 2. pastors for not joining him in preaching the evils of “voter fraud.”

It wasn’t my fault that my “prophecy” failed to come to pass. It’s your fault for not being better people and for not joining me in promoting an obvious lie.

Again, I couldn’t resist. I posted the following comment below Murillo’s video:

Help me understand this, please. Mr. Murillo says the reason all those prophecies that Trump would win the election failed is because the message from the pulpits did not include a call to repentance. Then he says the reason the prophecies failed was because no one took seriously his call to investigate voter fraud. Are those two failures connected?

Also, if, as Mr. Murillo and so many others say, voter fraud stole the election, why did none of the courts rule in favor of the Trump attorneys? Why did 61 courts–including courts presided over by Trump appointees—say the Trump team failed to provide evidence of voter fraud?

One last request: Please help me understand why God chose not to intervene to alter an election because folks in churches did not repent when the candidate they were supposed to elect, Trump, openly declared he had no need to repent? Put more plainly: Why do the “little” folks need to repent in order to elect a man who refuses to repent?

Why do the “little” folks need to repent in order to elect a man who refuses to repent?

  2. I was pondering on the state of the USA (I often do; considering the size and potential of the USA one should) and wondered as someone who was a teenager at the ‘Dawning of the Age of Aquarius’ as it were and seeing Civil Right grow, how did things get where they are today?
Then I skittered back down history, thinking about The Know Nothings, The Civil War, The KKK, The experiences of Chinese migrant workers in the 19th Century, those of the Latinos of the West Coast in the first half of the 20th Century, The Radio Priest, McCarthyism. It’s always been there of course, nothing new yet the wellspring of reason and intelligence has always won through, not always perfectly of course.
Sadly these days, any idiot can get themselves a nationwide audience through Social Media, You Tube etc, etc, etc.
There’s your problem; the idiots can get onto Social Media, YouTube etc and have more babble time than ever. What is even worse they don’t have to get through publishers, the mechanics of broadcasters etc; they can just babble by voice or finger.
Now we know this is not unique to the USA, but I guess we all thought the USA was so big and so diverse the idiots would be swamped. Sadly like other effluent they float.

    1. Agree totally. They’ve always been there, but with the proliferation of social media with no constraints, it is growing exponentially. This is something that cannot be controlled, and will be our undoing. Stupidity will kill us.

      1. A couple of years ago, whenever I saw this type of item I started making a comic remark on WP that there was not enough research being done into the deadly disease of ‘Terminal Stupidity’.
        It’s not funny anymore.

  3. Terminal Stupidity! I love that Roger. Simple, yet absolutely spot on analysis of life in much of America these days.

  4. “Also, if, as Mr. Murillo and so many others say, voter fraud stole the election, why did none of the courts rule in favor of the Trump attorneys?” Of the approximately 60 lawsuits filed, only a small fraction for the Trump campaign, and of those decided on the merit that weren’t thrown out before evidence was allowed to be presented in the process, 2/3rds of those rulings have substantiated that there was in fact voter fraud. Of those who have already made it to the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court dismissed them and refused to comment, something the Clarence Thomas publicly chided the rest of the court for. Just fyi. And you may not have been following closely anymore, but several of those lawsuits are still alive and moving forward. Particularly in Antrim County, Michigan. ✌😉

  5. In Georgia and Arizona, two Republican states that went for Trump in 2016, and are led by staunch Trump supporting governors, both certified that the elections were legally and fairly completed. Also, I do believe that both conducted at least two recounts. Also, pertaining to those bogus lawsuits, when Mayor Giulianni and Sidney Powell were asked specifically about voter fraud, neither of them were able to provide evidence that it occurred. My friend, please give up this charade. It’s killing democracy in this country and quite frankly, it’s dangerous as hell. What’s going on in Arizona right now is a travesty. Why it was ever allowed to go forward I’ll never know. Who are these people? They aren’t election experts. They’re nothing but conspiracy theory Trump sycophants trying to drum up something..anything..that the former disgraced president can claim to his crazy followers that he was wronged. It’s beyond the pale. The sooner you and the rest of the Republican Party move on from this debacle, the better off we’ll all be. HE lost. Biden won. It’s that simple.
