Our good friend Jerry, over at Grumpy’s Grumblings, has a message for the GOP. In his most recent post, he takes them to task for their blind and cowardly acquiescence to the disgraced former 45th president of the United States. And yesterday’s disgraceful failure to convict the insurrectionist-in-chief was the final straw. Please read the following excerpt; I’ve included a link at the end to continue reading on his new blog site. Thanks Jerry. Your voice of reason and common sense is always welcome here.

January 20, 2017, was my last day as a registered Republican. Today, February 13, 2021, is my first day since 1973 as a registered Democrat. In the interim I was unaffiliated.

Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and subsequent election was—to that date—the Republican Party’s lowest point in its 167-year history. Today’s vote by 43 cowardly Republican senators to acquit Trump of his heinous behavior since his 2020 election loss easily surpassed that 2016 descent into unprincipled madness.

I still disagree with some Democratic policies, but principles are more important than policies. The Republican Party no longer has any principles. With a few exceptions, its leaders—and I use the term relatively—care about nothing more than hanging onto their official positions of power, prestige, and possessions.

I understand that my little party-changing protest will change nothing within the nation’s lawmaking institutions. But if enough Republicans and Independents were to register as Democrats that the media and then politicians were to take notice, then change might begin within the GOP. But that’s not likely; it’s too late; the party has gone too far.

  1. I read Jerry’s post yesterday.

My immediate reaction is that I will continue to think of myself as an independent. But my state (Illinois) probably thinks I am a registered Democrat, because I vote in the Democratic primaries each year (this is an open primary state). I think they build their list of party members from the primary vote selection.

I’m not a big fan of the Democratic party. I see them as the poster child for organizational incompetence. But that’s still better than the Republicans, who have looked unfit to govern since the time Newt Gingrich was their party leader in the house.

What I really wonder, is what does this say about Christianity. Jesus famously said “by their fruits ye shall know them.” When I look at Trump supporters, they look thoroughly unchristian to me, using the teachings of Jesus as a standard. Yet they claim to be Christian, and they had the support of many who claim to be leaders of American Christianity.

Yes, the Republican party has lost its way. And American Christianity has also lost its way.

    1. As I’ve said many times Neil, I’m all for a viable third party to come on the scene. But, to nobody’s shock, both of the parties have made it so hard for any others to enter the fray. So for now, it’s what we’re stuck with. I’ll vote Democratic any day of the week over any Republican. It’s about what the party, at it’s core is about: a huge tent, multi-cultural, working people, the downtrodden, FDR style democratic socialism, holding corporations accountable, voting rights, civil rights, separation of church and state, etc…There’s more, and Dems have not always stayed as true as I’d like them to be. And you’re right, organizationally, they can drive you crazy. But I’ll defend their policies over massive tax cuts for the rich, voter suppression, rigged gerrymandering, corruption, anti-gun control, religious extremism, and now full speed ahead white supremacy. I think it’s a pretty clear choice if you ask me.

      1. We need a viable third party so bad. I have voted third party candidates many times in the past.

      2. Now would seem like the best time for that to happen.

    2. I identify as a Christian as well, but the term “American” Christianity is problematic.

  2. Maybe we are heading towards a more realistic system of smaller partys with stricter objectives instead of just two large partys with many conflicting points of view under one umbrella like the Democratic Party is famous for. Actually that is really the reason Biden was elected, a coalition of the far right and left in the party that met in the middle.

    1. Good analysis Don. Agreed. He was perhaps THE only candidate who could have beat him. And thankfully, he did.

  3. Good to see ol’ Grumpy again! I read his post yesterday, but got sidetracked before I had a chance to leave a comment, so thanks for the reminder! As I commented on his post, it seems to me that the Great Divide has crossed the point of no return, that there is no common ground left on which to have a meeting of the minds. I don’t know what the future holds for this nation, but I don’t think it can legitimately be called the ‘United’ States anymore.
