Around 2:30 in the morning on November 9, 2016, Hillary Clinton called Donald Trump to congratulate him and concede the election.

Later that same day, with her husband Bill behind her, and a crowd of her campaign staff and supporters in the audience, she publicly did the same thing. Eyes welling up with tears, she stood there and showed the nation what it’s like to be a patriot. This is how we do it in the United States of America:

“Last night, I congratulated Donald Trump and offered to work with him on behalf of our country. I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans. This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for, and I’m sorry that we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country.”

You battle and fight hard to win, but in the end, if the votes don’t end up in your favor, you do the right thing for the country. Of course, it’s not easy. Nobody likes to lose, especially when you’re trying to win the presidency, the highest office in the land, and the rest of the world. But when it’s time, it’s time.

In those immediate hours after it was clear that Hillary had lost, there were some over at the Fox News far-right echo chamber ridiculing her for waiting too long to concede. She’s a sore loser, some of them said. What’s she waiting for? Give it up, Hillary. You lost! It’s time to move on.

Let’s flash forward now to 2020. Here we are, nearly two weeks since major media outlets declared that Joe Biden is the apparent winner and President-elect. And the current White House occupant has still not conceded.

Why? What’s the reason? Is he hurt? Is he angry and distraught? Emotional? What is he, some kind of snowflake? Please, Fox News, and the rest of the radical right media world, why are you not calling on this dangerous and lunatic man to do the right thing and concede? Just as you did when the ‘female candidate’ took a few hours to do the same four years ago.

We all know the answer. It’s called hypocrisy. The right-wing crowd has the market cornered when it comes to the double-standard. And, in true Republican Party fashion, when it comes to winning and losing, rubbing someone’s nose in a loss is the preferred method of how things are done these days. Maybe you’ve heard the term “spiking the football?”

That’s what they did in 2016. Now, though, when it’s their cult leader who’s on the losing end, he has every right, according to them, to use the courts to make sure every vote was legally cast. I’m sure they would have stood by Hillary if she had done the same.

Yeah, sure they would have. Seriously, though, the vote was much closer in 2016, and by the far-right standard, she would have been well within her rights to challenge the results.

But Hillary chose not to. Because she believes a peaceful transition preceded by a gracious concession is a hallmark of the norms and traditions our democracy depends on — since the beginning of our republic.

Until now, of course.

Because now, we have, as Eugene Robinson of The Washington Post referred to in an article a couple of days ago, The Mad King in charge. That’s an apt description for sure. He thinks he’s a king, and he’s undoubtedly mad – literally, as well as figuratively.

To the far-right loonies, it’s okay. To the current spineless Republicans in Congress, we need to give him some space to blow off steam. Eventually, this will all end; some of them are saying. The election will be certified, and we’ll have a nice peaceful transition.

Bullshit.

The incoming administration can’t even get intelligence briefings due to the Trump stooge over at the General Services Administration (GSA) not ‘ascertaining’ that Biden is the winner.

And even more troubling, they aren’t receiving any information about plans surrounding the Covid-19 vaccine distribution, which the new administration will be in charge of implementing.

It’s a dereliction of duty and honor to this country, the likes of which we’ve never seen before. Well, that’s not true, to be honest. We’ve seen it over and over since the Mad King’s been in charge since 2017.

Now when we need members of Congress to grow a spine the most, they sit on their asses and head home for the holiday – not before confirming another unqualified far-right judge, of course. Once again, shame on them for letting this charade continue.

Let’s be honest, folks, the biggest snowflake in the world isn’t a liberal. It’s the Mad King himself, barricaded in the White House – settling scores, spewing conspiracy theories, and scorching everything he can to screw over the incoming administration.

Enough, please, with the kid-glove treatment of the petulant little man. He lost – handily. Get over it, GOP, and do your job for the American people and the Constitution you swore to protect and honor. Eighty million of us have had enough.

  1. Perfect post, Jeff. You say it is a dereliction of duty … I say it is TREASON. Trump is trying to silence the voices of We the People and I hope … I sincerely hope that he fails and is taken straight from the White House to Leavenworth on January 20th. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. The GOP are treating Trump as we might treat a two-year-old child, but … he is a 74-year-old ‘man’ who has thrown temper tantrum after temper tantrum for four years now. Get Him OUT!!! NOW!

    1. Thank you Jill, and for the reblog! I saw the parts of Hillary’s concession speech on TV the other day, which precipitated my writing this post. I found myself getting so angry. I remember that smug whack job Sean Hannity mocking her for not conceding fast enough. Shit, it was the very next day! And now I’m hearing Trump is only doing this to get back at Dems because of how hard the transition was for him and how he wasn’t accepted. Give me a break! At this rate Jill, you and I aren’t going to make it for the next 60 days!

      1. My pleasure, Jeff! As soon as I saw the title to your post in my notifications, I knew I would be re-blogging it. I am, like you, sickened and disgusted by these fools who criticized Hillary, claimed that Obama would never leave office voluntarily, but now they are backing this addled oaf who is acting like a two-year-old child. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. The transition in 2016 was ‘hard’ for him??? He was the one who refused to even show up for half the meetings, who couldn’t stay focused long enough to sit through important briefings … grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I hear you, Jeff … I can feel the toll, both physical and emotional that this is taking on me, as I’m sure you can. BTW … I will answer your emails this evening … sorry, I’ve been behind on everything this week!

Jeff has perfectly stated my own thoughts with this post. I’ve been pondering a similar post for two days, but my temper gets in the way of coherence, so … thank you, Jeff, for putting my feelings into words.

  3. When I was a Republican and nearly everyone I spent time with also was a Republican, we often speculated, “If Obama loses in 2012, will he leave office?” Well, that question was moot. He won, and Mitt Romney conceded. Then, as 2016 approached (by then I was beginning to distance myself from the so-called GOP), I heard many of my Republican friends ask, “Will Obama refuse to leave office when his second term is over?” Well, of course he left, and he did so graciously.
Now, those same Republican friends have lost all concern about a president who might violate law and precedent in a quest for perpetual power. Maddening hypocrisy.

      3. Yeah. Maybe. But the Right can claim the most. As well as being the biggest liars and most corrupt. It’s not even close

    2. I hear you Jerry. Not only was it a gracious act for Obama to have him over at the White House, but the transition itself was seamless. And, I just saw a clip of Trump thanking Obama in his inauguration speech for how he was treated. Come to think of it, I think that’s the only compliment he’s ever made concerning Obama. Even after all the ‘birther’ crap, Obama turned the other cheek and did what all previous presidents had done. What Trump is doing now is beyond a disgrace. But, we knew it was going to be this way. He always goes as low as possible….and then some.

  4. Jeff, as we have discussed, this was highly predicted and predictable. Bill Maher has said for two years, what will we do when Trump won’t leave? John Oliver said earlier in the year, Trump will have to be dragged out of the White House. That was funny at the time. But, when Bernie Sanders said on Jimmy Kimmel’s show a month ago – Trump will claim victory on election night (as he knew the in person votes were counted first), he will sue to stop the counting, and then say the election is being stolen – he was eerily correct.

What is not spoken focused on enough is this was an orchestrated fraud on the American people perpetrated by Donald Trump. He defamed the mail-in voting process, he hobbled the post office, he told his followers to vote in person (as those votes are counted first), he got some GOP led legislators to change the mail-in counting rules, and he hired 1,000 attorneys around the country.

Yes, this is fraud, but it is by the guy who is saying he was cheated. Oh and by the way, claiming fraud by others is straight out of the narcissist playbook – it is called projection. It is a defense mechanism to take the spotlight off your cheating.

His followers are not getting that message. He is not tweeting how he has lost 24 court cases. He is not tweeting about Republican election officials who are pushing back. He is not tweeting why he fired Chris Krebs. He is letting Rudy G blather, waving papers like Joe McCarthy did during the communist witch hunts, saying there is wide-spread fraud. Keith

    1. Yep, all true Keith. It’s nice to see some Republicans pushing back. But clearly not enough. The damage he’s doing is immeasurable. It’s got to stop. Now

      1. True on both counts. The voices in the GOP who are stepping up are still a trickle. I did like where two Republican Congresspeople (off the record) noted the last straw was Rudy Giuliani’s illogical rants, some of which contradicted the outgoing presidents’s rants (my word). Keith

  5. Hello Jeff. I find it interesting that reality and doing the right thing do not seem to apply to the very people who championed personal responsibility. Could it be everything they preached, everything they said, just be a smoke screen to hide their joy at getting their own way or as a means to do that? Hugs

    1. Of course Scottie. It’s all a ruse. Personal responsibility is just one of their ridiculous hypocritical mantras. It’s all about one thing and one thing only with this crowd: POWER. They don’t care how much they lie, cheat, or steal to get it and keep it. That so many millions of people vote for these idiots says so much about the state of our country.
