I’m a little angry today, so please excuse the following post, for it might offend some people. Sorry in advance.

The GOP is the gift that keeps on giving. Since media outlets declared Joe Biden President-elect, I wondered how it would affect my writing in this space. After all, for much of the past two-plus years, the White House’s current occupant provided lots of material – the majority of which was mind-numbingly despicable and shocking.

But then I figured out that even after Joe Biden is sworn in on January 20, 2021, we will have one political party that continues to establish itself as the party of kooks, whack-jobs, science deniers, and conspiracy theorists.

In other words, I’ll have plenty to write about. I suppose I owe them a thank you?

Seriously, though, as Joe Biden said yesterday in his press conference when talking about the current GOP’s obstruction and pandemic response, “Can you guys please tell me, what’s wrong with these people?” Mr. President-elect, I’ve been asking myself this same question for years now. I don’t get it, and I’ll never get it.

The majority of them still haven’t recognized Biden as the President-elect, and many are still questioning the validity of the election, clinging to the notion that massive fraud took place. Hint: It did not. And every state says so, even those with Republican secretaries of state. Not only is this dangerous, but in my view, it’s damn near treasonous.

And, as if we don’t have enough crazies in Congress, along comes Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, who becomes the first open supporter of the conspiracy theory QAnon to win a seat. Although she made various racist, anti-Semitic and Islamophobic statements during the campaign, she still managed to beat her Democratic opponent in the 14th Congressional District by more than 225,00 votes.

Evidently, the racist comments didn’t resonate much with the citizens of the 14th District. And neither did the following statement she made in a 2017 YouTube video, “I’m very excited about that now there’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take this global cabal of Satan-worshiping pedophiles out, and I think we have the president to do it.”

It says a lot about the people of that district who were more than proud to vote for such a crackpot. And, as you can see in the following photo, brandishing an AR-15 isn’t a deal-breaker either. Frankly, it’s an attraction to many of our 2nd Amendment worshiping males throughout America.

What’s wrong with these people?

But it’s not just Republicans in Congress either. We have several governors who come pretty damn close to Mrs. Greene’s stature as a hero to the radical right and clueless voters. How about South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, for example?

Noem is the genius governor who decided that in the middle of a raging pandemic, she’d be more than happy to welcome nearly 500,000 bikers from around the country into her state for the infamous Sturgis rally. What could go wrong?

Surely a bunch of mask-less people getting liquored up at local bars and music venues spewing droplets like a Pacific Northwest rainstorm wouldn’t be a problem. I’m not sure because I’m not a scientist. But right now, South Dakota is averaging nearly 1,000 cases of Covid every day this month, and deaths have surged almost 75% in just the last two weeks.

No biggie. Not for this governor. Doubling down, as crackpots tend to do, her office issued the following statement Friday: “It’s a good day for freedom. Joe Biden realizes that the president doesn’t have the authority to institute a mask mandate. For that matter, neither does Governor Noem, which is why she has provided her citizens with the full scope of the science and trusted them to make the best decisions for themselves and their loved ones.”

Bless her heart. I wonder if those in ICU’s at the present moment would have wished the good governor had issued a mask mandate weeks ago. Sadly, they probably do not. According to an RN who works in one of the local hospitals, some patients are in pandemic denial. I wonder where they would get that idea?

Perhaps they’ve been listening to the current crackpot Covid advisor to the White House’s current occupant. Yes, that’s none other than world-renown epidemiologist Dr. Scott Atlas. Oh wait, never mind, he’s a neuro-radiologist. My mistake – I digress.

Dr. Atlas doesn’t think much of the current pandemic. He’s downplayed it ever since he began appearing on Fox News several months ago – obviously the number one attribute and resume highlight the current president coveted.

Herd immunity. Yeah, that’s the solution according to the good doctor – a theory that nearly 100% of scientists and experts discount and reject. Even his former employer, Stanford University, has distanced itself from this quack. They want no part of him.

And then Atlas weighed in yesterday on Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s decision to initiate additional restrictions to stem a horrific rise in cases in that state:

I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that the good doctor might have been advocating violence. But he denied that was his intention a few hours later, merely stating that he meant people should exercise their right to “peacefully protest.”

I wonder if the idiot knew about the arrest several weeks ago of white supremacists, who allegedly wanted to kidnap and possibly murder Governor Whitmer? Surely he couldn’t be that stupid and tone-deaf. Could he? Well, he’s working for the Trump administration. Enough said.

I could go on, but I will not. I was going to talk about Florida’s ignorant Republican governor too, but quite frankly, I’m exhausted. I won’t bombard you any longer today. My mind needs a break from the incompetence, the conspiracy theories, the false patriotism, the treasonous-like denial of Joe Biden’s victory, the lying and delusion.

In sum, is it any wonder that Governor Noem has been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate for the Republican Party in 2024? Oh, yes, it’s true. Maybe Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene will be her running-mate if she wins the nomination. A match made in heaven.

Nothing would surprise. Because folks, this GOP – this Republican Party – is batshit crazy. It’s the party of Trump, through and through. They deserve each other, and even when he’s long gone, I can’t see much changing.

Already the far-right is denouncing Fox News as being ‘fake news.’ That’s right, Fox News. When even Fox isn’t nutty enough for them, God help us all.

  1. I’m sad to say that my former political party is now not only crazy, it’s also cruel. Those two traits combined equal, I believe, sociopathic. Extremely dangerous.

    1. Very much so Jerry. I don’t know what it’s going to take for this to change. Perhaps not having Mitch McConnell controlling the Senate would be a great start. Even then, I’m not so sure.

  2. Great Post. Realistic, Far too polite when we consider who it’s directed against. People will say Joe Biden wants to be inclusive and bring the two sides together, but one side doesn’t lean towards that. They prefer the side of denial, irrationality, and ever threatened violence just because they own half the World’s weapons .I do wish you all the best over there

    1. Thank you David. You’re right. Biden does want to unite us but you’ve got to have the other side willing to dance. They just don’t care. He’s going to find that out real soon.

  3. I share your anger, Jeff, and in fact you were more restrained than I think I could be at this point. Just a bit ago I found out that Trump has now fired Christopher Krebs, the senior cybersecurity official in the Department of Homeland Security who had stated this was the most secure election in our history. He fired him! Because the man had the guts to deny Trump’s fraudulent claims that there was massive voter fraud! Disagree with Donnie and you’re out! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

    1. Thank you Jill! And for the reblog. I know. This really is scorched earth policy time for the idiot. He’s burning the house down as he leaves. But we both knew this would happen, right? My best friend, who’s a lifelong Republican, but a moderate who actually voted for Obama in 2008, texted me that he thought they needed to do the 25th Amendment on him…NOW. I was floored. He thinks he’s even more out of control than he was the past 4 years. I think he’s right, and it’s amazing that he can surpass that level of horror. I don’t know how this ends Jill, but I’m concerned….very concerned.

      1. At least one of your republican friends still has some sense! All of mine have gone doololly-tap (I picked that one up from David!) Like you, Jeff, I am very concerned, for he has no limits and that’s dangerous. Even more frustrating is that the majority of the Republicans in congress are enabling him, still afraid of how he might damage their careers. We the People really don’t seem to matter at all anymore. I’m concerned, I’m angry, I’m depressed. 1,510 hours left ’til Biden’s inauguration.

  5. Jeff, the embrace by the president and some supporters of the conspiracy theorists banter is telling. What is simply amazing is the group is missing the conspiracy right in front of them. Why? Is they are wittingly or unwittingly (it does not matter) doing the heavy lifting on the president’s fraudulent and orchestrated voter fraud claims. A hard working guy named Chris Krebs who works for Homeland Security got fired yesterday. Per his modus operandi, Trump fired someone who was telling the truth to contradict his BS.

Per Occam’s Razor (the simplest reason is the usually the best one), is it easier to believe there is a vast conspiracy against Trump (which would include more than several Republican election officials) or that a very untruthful person is lying yet again? What is so sad is what the president is doing is overt, orchestrated and predictable. Yet, these conspiracy folks would rather believe the rabid posts of folks who do this for a living (Jones, Hannity, Limbaugh, Russian trolls, etc). Keith

    1. His people are so duped Keith. I don’t know if any of them are redeemable. The idea that he’s gotten basically 9 million more people to vote for him in 2016 is beyond troubling. Of course, 14 million more people voted for his opponent than did in 2016 also. So, it’s a good news/bad news thing I guess. But those 73 million? They see something in him that you and I and most of America do not. How long will they continue to follow him after he’s gone? That’s another important question to ponder.

      1. Jeff, part of this is what Trump and the GOP ran against. Most Americans choose to be ill-informed, so they can be easily swayed by fear tactics, some of which are just inane. Trump needed props and mud to sling. Whoever came up with the slogan “defund the police” meant less money, not all money, but the GOP and Trump sold it as “all money.” It was as horrible a slogan as ever devised. While 90% plus of the BLM protestors were civil, multi-cultural, that is not what Republicans and conservative voters were led to believe – they saw those who were rioting. Just like the Trump supporters are correct that they should not all be painted as white supremacists, the fact was lost that people creating violence should not paint the entire BLM movement. Then, there is that socialism thing. We have socialism, but most Americans do not realize that. It is called Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment, workers comp…

This is what many Republicans voted on. One of the understated sources of information to middle America is a quiet company called Sinclair Broadcasting. John Oliver has done a piece on them. They own about 40% of the local TV stations and require the same message to be read at the end of the evening news. So, they can quietly sway people beneath the radar of the Fox and other talking heads. Keith

      2. Yep, I’m well aware of Sinclair Keith. One of our local Fox affiliates out here is owned by Sinclair. One of Trump’s loyalists, Boris Epstein was doing a monologue every night that they forced Sinclair stations to air. Most of it was all Trump propaganda. Our news and social media situation is in a dangerous place right now. I don’t know what can be done, but the disinformation being spewed is actually getting people killed. Unconscionable….

    2. Is that the number you heard? I hadn’t heard that. That’s still a pretty big number of Americans, although not as high as I thought. Still, troubling nonetheless.

  8. I know the Biden team is trying to be patient and maintain civility, but I’m sick of all of the enabling of this madness by the Republican “leadership.” Biden is already rightfully trying to tackle the pandemic crisis, but once we get past this together I want to see some teeth kicked in, starting with Giuliani.
