The President said something shocking…again

Posted by

It’s deja vu all over again. The President of the United States said something shocking and troubling beyond belief. My wife and I looked at each other in utter amazement and disbelief. We threw up our hands and yelled at the television screen, “What the hell is wrong with you?!” We watched the pundits fall all over themselves trying to reason why the President said what he said. Some said it was impeachable, if not downright illegal. Others wondered what the Democrats were going to about it. And others still, wondered how the Republican Party would react to what he said.

Nearly 24 hours pass, the President tries to walk back what he said and blamed Democrats and the ‘fake news’ media for blowing it all out of proportion. Democrats scream and shout how offensive the President’s comments were. Republicans paper over what he said, and insist that in the long run, they know the President would do the right thing.

And then we forget about it … until the next thing … and the next.

This is the world in which we now live. For the past two-and-a-half years, this is how things have played out in the beautiful world of Donald Trump’s reality show. You would think that if a President of the United States admitted that he would gladly accept ‘opposition research’ from a foreign government, action would surely be forthcoming from Congress to at the very least, censure the President for his callous remark.

But that’s not what’s going to happen. It never does. Even today, I’ve heard Democratic politicians steering away from the word impeachment, saying instead that we need to get ‘all of the facts’ first. Oh, a few are calling for an impeachment inquiry, though certainly not enough to make a difference in the overall scope of things.

Instead, just yesterday we received word from House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, that former Trump Communications Director Hope Hicks, had agreed to testify … in private. Isn’t that wonderful? And did I not see Donald Trump Jr. yesterday, grinning from ear to ear as he strolled into a House Intelligence Committee hearing to testify … in private?

I may be wrong here, but I thought it was the Democratic position that the American people needed to hear from the people who played prominent roles in the Mueller Report. You know, since almost nobody will read the report and it’s 448 pages, public testimony is how the Democrats were going to build the case against Donald Trump. Oh well, it sure was nice to see John Dean testify in public at least.

Nothing against Mr. Dean here, but is this the best that Democrats can do? Do we have to reach back nearly 45 years to find a guy willing to come and testify about why what Trump is doing is worse than what Richard Nixon did? By testifying openly at the Watergate hearings, Mr. Dean certainly did America a favor by detailing the criminal enterprise Nixon was operating out of the White House. But, I’m sorry House Democrats—this isn’t going to cut it. Enough with the nostalgia tour. We need to see these people in person and under oath, testifying before the American people. Why is this so hard?

The failure to act against this President only serves to embolden him. Like a mafia boss, he only understands power and strength. Capitulating, as Democrats continue to do, will merely fuel the autocratic fire that burns so brightly in his soul.

Meanwhile, where is the media and why are they not camped out in front of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office? Should they not be demanding answers as to why he refuses to bring up any election security measures that the House has passed? And will he now allow a vote on Senator Mark Warner’s Fire Act, which would make it mandatory for any politician to contact the FBI if approached by foreign governments offering services or information? Considering the President’s recent remarks, you would think this would be front and center for the Leader. Instead, what we will get is what we always get from McConnell—silence.

Once again, democracy is under another code red. It’s flashing brightly and illuminating the sky. If the Democrats fail to start an impeachment inquiry immediately, we will move ever so close to the edge of the cliff with this President.

In the meantime, I’ll turn on the tube tonight and wait to hear more shock and awe from the mouth of this President. Yes, and my wife and I will shout until we’re blue in the face … until the next day when he does it again, and we do it again. Deja vu indeed …

  1. I imagine that we are beginning to get a taste of what it must have been like for the average German citizen in the 1930s … seeing, but not fully comprehending the final outcome. Hands tied, not knowing what to do, how to stop the madness. Hoping for the best, yet knowing, somehow, that those hopes are just that … hopes. We are becoming inured, and therein is one of the dangers. He blocks, he tackles, he obfuscates, he lies, he covers up … there is only so much the mind can process at any one time. And then … there are the blind ones, the ones who wear rose-coloured glasses, who refuse to see the writing on the wall, who think, for some reason that we cannot understand, that everything is just hunky-dory. The end goal is clear, but what is less clear is whether we can stop it, and if so, how. Sigh. I thought the democratic majority in the House would help, but instead, it seems to have only made matters worse, for they are like the parent who threatens their child repeatedly, but never follows through on their threats. Sigh.

    1. I’m beyond frustrated with the Dems. Patience these days is a virtue I am failing to achieve. The volume of corruption is so wide and vast. And they give us John Dean. Ughhhh

      1. I know, my friend. I have no patience these days, and threatened to throw the maintenance man off the stairs a few days ago while he was replacing a banister on my neighbor’s staircase. The noise set my nerves on edge, as I was working on a post about … what else??? I’m frankly ready to reincarnate as a wolf … any day now! 🐺

      2. Yep. I hear you Jill. Going to immerse myself in a little golf this weekend. Like I’ve said, sometimes you have to get away from the every day bad news. Hard to believe how much the orange menace has invaded our lives. It’s his plan I believe. His malignant narcissism requires it. He feeds on it. As long as we’re talking about him, good or bad, he’s satisfied. What a sick man…..

  2. Quite simply, it is illegal. And, what is interesting, he brought up the subject and George just asked questions. Mueller said he could not find sufficient evidence to confirm conspiracy, but also alluded that they did not interview the president and some deleted texts. The answer is in the financials. Because of the nature of the person (his untruthfulness, lack of moral compass, large ego), winning is everything. His five biographers have noted Trump has always had a problem with the truth. So, from what I have read from his and others’ changing stories, coupled with Michael Cohen’s testimony, Trump is also guilty of conspiracy and already did what he told George he would do in the future. There is no doubt in my mind, he is guilty of obstruction and still is. Keith

    1. So true. And the Republican Party continues to be complicit. It’s all up to the Dems now. They either exercise their Constitutional duties…or they don’t. I fear the dithering will continue. They’ll negotiate for people to come and testify…in private. The whole thing is so frustrating. Every time I think it’s a breaking point…and we’re off to the next corrupt act. Something has to give. And soon.
And thank you btw, for your wonderful piece on Fire Ice. You really did your homework Keith. I have not watched it yet, but it is definitely high on my list. This is a call to arms for our country. This isn’t some hoax invented by the Chinese…as some idiotic president once said! I like how economics are tied into it. We really can create jobs doing this. And Dems need to stress this over and over. Jay Inslee has a really good plan. Elizabeth Warren has one…as does Biden. It’s going to take a very strong president to get this stuff done. If we leave it up to the Republicans…we’re doomed.

      1. Many thanks. As I shared with Jill, the Democrats need to lean in on this topic. They also need to be better schooled on what already is being done to respond to pushback. There is a lot of progress going on now, so they should speak of reinforcing these good things. The GOP needs to get on the train. We must ask politicians what they plan to do about. That hoaxter guy you referenced edited what scientists could say to Congress in writing. But, we should remind ourselves that Trump is not the first person to do this. George W. Bush has a petroleum lobbyist as his White House Council on the Environment and he deleted references in scientific reports that used the terms “global warming” and “climate change.” Former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Florida Governor Rick Scott (now Senator) did the same, with Scott saying state officials could not say those words in public. Why? What are they afraid of? The truth? Keith

      2. We have science on our side Keith. They have big oil. I’ll take science any day of the week. The corruption is endless, yet these guys keep getting elected. The people deserve accountability here as well. Asking them to become more informed does not seem to be an outlandish request to me. Unfortunately, some are unable to intellectually realize what the hell is going on. Sad state of affairs…..

      3. True, but these fossil fuel folks own a TV network called Fox News. And, there are 30,000 internet sources of faux hoax and denial stuff, while only 700 peer reviewed science sites on climate change. You can tell where the money is. We need to help science beat on the drum. The good news is stuff is happening without Trump and these blockers. Since a lot of this stuff need not be huge projects, if the utilities and fossil fuel companies don’t step up more, there business model is in danger. That is why there are throwing so much money at the hoax stuff.

      4. I finally watched Fire Ice last night. All Americans ought to watch it. It’s frightening, yet hopeful as well. It just appears that other countries, especially those in Western Europe, seem to be on the offense. Finland..Iceland..Germany..etc..All are making great strides with new technologies and the like. The scale needs ramped up over here. That’s where presidential leadership would be nice. We’re not going to get it with you know who. It’s why 2020 is going to be so important. It’s an existential threat to all of us. Like so many other issues, the big corporations own the politicians. It’s got to stop.

  3. IMO, it’s been demonstrated again and again that this man has waaay too much power — especially over people — for events to play out as they do. It may sound crazy, but I think there are “things” going on in the bowels of the White House that are being well kept from “we the people.” And I think a lot of it has to do with clandestine manipulations and influences by the current individual sitting in the Oval Office.

That may have a bit of a conspiracy ring to it, but I simply cannot accept that things are simply “happening” because we have a Bimbo in control. When there is blatant disregard for the Constitution and NO ONE does anything about it … well, I’ll let you fill in the blanks.

    1. I can’t disagree with you Nan. It’s like Rick Wilson, the Republican strategists book, “Everything Trump touches..dies.” In this case, it’s our democracy and our institutions. His cult will say that they voted for him to blow things up in Washington….Is this what they had in mind? Sadly, I think it is. To your point though, I do feel much of what he’s doing is being done for the express purpose of helping himself and his family. All the corruption…the pay for play…emolument violations…etc…He’s enriching himself, to the detriment of all the rest of us. I think the idea that we needed a businessman to run the country can now officially be laid to rest.

      1. He’s enriching himself — ABSOLUTELY! But I still say the number of people “doing his bidding” plays into the big picture as well. I just feel strongly that there’s more than meets the eye …
